Why research matters
Progress in treating brain cancer has historically been limited. Research is fundamental to improving understanding, diagnosis and treatment, and ultimately to finding cures.
Brainwaves NI has a strong relationship with the Johnston Cancer Research Centre at Queen’s University Belfast. In recent years, fundraising by members and supporters has enabled the charity to provide more than £700,000 towards research.
Brainwaves NI studentships
Thanks to generous fundraisers, Brainwaves NI committed £178,000 over three years to support three PhD students at the centre.
- Daniel Crummey explores the impact of inflammation on resistance to radiotherapy in brain cancer.
- Tom McGirr investigates the role of mRNA translation machinery in glioblastoma development and treatment resistance.
- Malachy McIvor investigates the potential of ultra-high dose-rate photon FLASH radiotherapy in glioblastoma.
Essential laboratory equipment
Brainwaves NI also provided funds to help Dr Seyed Mehdi Jafarnejad and his research team purchase a refrigerated table-top centrifuge in 2023.
A centrifuge spins samples at high speed to separate their components. Refrigeration protects temperature-sensitive biological material during the process, helping researchers carry out reliable laboratory work.
A close local partnership
Committee members attend events and laboratory tours to see how donated funds are being used. Researchers and students also attend Brainwaves NI meetings and annual general meetings to share progress in an accessible way.
