Supporting Kid’s Research
Working with our local families, Brainwaves NI are introducing the creation of the DIPGAngels Fund – a dedicated fund within Brainwaves NI with All donations and fundraising for DIPG Angels being used to offer a fighting chance against a currently unstoppable monster that steals beloved children from their families.
Louise and Mervyn Bunting heartbreakingly lost their beautiful 9 year old daughter Rebekah to the most deadly type of Kid’s Brain Cancer – Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). And sadly, they are not alone there are other local families who have been devastated by the loss of their children to DIPG.
Unfortunately unlike other brain tumour types, there is currently no Treatment. The survival rate is 0%. Surgery is impossible. Chemotherapy is ineffective and Radiotherapy is only offered as Palliative care. Median survival is 9 to 12 months.
Currently every child diagnosed with DIPG faces the same heartbreaking outcome: not only will it steal their life, in the process it will shut down every body function and system and cause untold suffering.
We know the cruel and horrific reality of the toll it takes on kids and the shocking facts about DIPG:
> Brain Tumours are the #1 cancer killer of UK Children
> The most FATAL Childhood Brain Cancer is DIPG
> It causes 80% of all Brain Cancer deaths in Children
> It is described as a ‘rare’ cancer BUT every 9 days a UK child is diagnosed with DIPG.
We are also aware of the depressing reality that for many years research into brain tumours has been woefully underfunded by government and big cancer charities. The burden of funding of brain tumour research has fallen to brain tumour charities and the focus of research has been on the most common types.
So for the 1% of children diagnosed with this type of brain tumour, the only hope has been the parent-led DIPG charities who have made it their mission to try and change the outcome for future children.
We know that the only way to stop this happening to other children is to fund promising DIPG Research in the vital search for a Treatment and ultimately a Cure. That is the aim of the DIPG Angels Fund: 90% of the fund will be invested in approved DIPGResearch and 10% will fund vital support.
We hope everyone will join us in supporting this important and urgent mission to give kids a fighting chance.
