Laura Farry’s story is one of resilience, courage, and hope. From her early battles with crippling headaches to her triumphant recovery from a rare brain tumour, Laura’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance.
Laura’s headaches began in her youth, growing in intensity and frequency as she entered her 20s. Despite seeking medical help and multiple misdiagnoses, the source of her pain remained elusive until she developed neck and shoulder pain, followed by blurred vision.
A visit to her optician revealed haemorrhages in both eyes and swollen optic nerves, prompting urgent hospitalisation and eventual diagnosis of a 5cm cystic lesion on her brain. Under the skilled hands of Mr. Abouharb at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital, Laura underwent successful surgery to remove the tumour, later identified as a rare and slow-growing Ganglioglioma.
Laura’s journey didn’t end with surgery. Despite some co-ordination and spatial awareness issues, she returned to work shortly after her operation, and in the years that followed, welcomed two children with her husband.
Supported by her family and medical professionals, Laura navigated the emotional rollercoaster of scans, appointments, and the uncertainty of her future. In January 2023, she received the news of being discharged after five years of follow-up, with no recurrence of the tumour.
Driven by her experience, Laura joined Brainwaves NI to connect with others affected by brain tumours in Northern Ireland and raise awareness of the signs and symptoms. As Northern Ireland’s only volunteer-led brain tumour research and support charity, Brainwaves NI relies on donations to fund crucial research and provide support to those in need.
Laura’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of listening to your body, seeking help, and trusting your instincts. Her journey inspires us to continue our mission of raising awareness, providing support, and funding vital research to combat brain tumours.
Together, let’s share Laura’s story, raise awareness, and support Brainwaves NI in their mission to make a difference.
