Brainwaves NI is delighted to announce that research funded by the charity has recently been published.

Northern Ireland based research at the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research at Queen’s University, Belfast is something that we at Brainwaves NI are passionate about.  Over the last number of years, thanks to our amazing fundraisers, we have been able to provide funding of almost £600,000 towards this vital research.

Any research takes time to show results, therefore we are delighted to be able to announce that a study focused on patients in Northern Ireland, initiated by Dr Tom Flannery, a Neurosurgeon from the RVH, and carried out by Professor Kevin Prise (QUB), Research Fellow Dr Caitriona McInerney (QUB) and their team, has been published in the journal Biomedicines  and has shown that certain drugs may be repurposed to treat brain tumours.

Brainwaves NI Chair, Colin McMillan, said: “The charity welcomes the news that existing drugs could be repurposed to treat brain tumours. The fact they are already approved is a major advantage. Given brain cancer statistics and high mortality rates of under 40 year olds a new approach is vital. Brainwaves NI is proud to have provided funding and thanks all involved for their dedication and the work that has gone into producing this research paper.
