Brainwaves NI is Northern Ireland’s only volunteer led brain tumours research and support charity

Research is fundamental to finding a cure for brain tumour. We have a strong relationship with the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research, Queen’s University, Belfast.

Over the last number of years we have provided over £500,000 funding towards that vital research.

Committee Member

My name is Toni Sharvin and I live in Drumaness with my partner, Barry, who is also a member of the committee.

In January 2022, following a few years of noticing some signs, I finally convinced Barry to go to A&E. We then found out that he had a craniopharyngioma.

Since then, Barry has undergone two surgeries, 6 weeks of radiotherapy and multiple appointments to manage his new conditions, although his tumour could not be removed. He will, however, be closely monitored by the amazing teams that support him.

Knowing that this is now a new way of life, we decided to try to find some support which is how we came across Brainwaves NI. We planned a skydive to fundraise for them which led to some other fundraising events and before we knew it, we were joining the committee.

Being a part of this charity is my way of finding a silver lining within everything. It has been amazing getting to work so closely with so many inspirational people who have nothing but support for one another. Whether you, or someone you love is affected, Brainwaves NI are here for support and I only hope that I can reciprocate this.
